Arbor Day in Michigan

If you would know strength and patience, welcome the company of trees.
Hal Borland

Today is Arbor Day in Michigan; it's always the last Friday in April. Across the country the date changes because of the temperatures for the region.
I'm not a radical tree hugger, I'm not really a radical anything. I guess I like to take the middle road, but I do believe in planting trees.

Whenever I move to a new house one of the first things I do is to plant a tree. Sometimes more than one. I like shade trees like maples and oak, and I love the beauty of flowering trees like the flowering crab, redbud, dogwood, thundercloud plum, and weeping cherry. But my all time favorite to plant at a new home is the pine. If you know anything about Michigan you know we have a lot of different pines. The Eastern white pine is our state tree. We love our pines and take pride in them. There are so many different types. For me the most majestic is the blue spruce.

I'm not planting any trees this year, and that makes me feel sad. The house isn't really mine anymore, and the next house is not mine yet, either. So I guess I'm in "tree limbo." You can bet as soon as I move into my new house, even though it will already be filled with pines of the north woods, I will find a place to plant more trees.
What will you do for Arbor Day?

No Texting in Michigan

Finally, we join other states that have banned texting while driving. Our Governor, Jennifer Granholm, will be on the Oprah show today, Friday, April 30th, to sign the law which will go into effect on July 1st. The fine will be $100 for the first offense and $200 for the second offense. No points will be added to the driving record. Not strict enough in my opinion but a start since some people don't seem to have any common sense of their own. Next, let's ban the use of cell phones while driving in cars altogether!

Tedibles Giveaway, an Earth Friendly Company

What have I been up to lately? Well, I'm starting a new business, and I decided to launch it today on Earth Day.
It began a few years ago when my dog, Jackie, died of liver and kidney failure due to eating tainted dog food. Of course, after purchasing the same dog food for years, I had cans of it still in the cupboard with numbers on it pointing directly back to a plant that had canned some of the bad food. That didn't do me any good. My dog was gone.

This past November I got a darling little Shih Tsu puppy, and named him Teddy (after Teddy Roosevelt), and yes. he looks like a Teddy Bear. I resolved never to let the same thing happen again. I admit it, he's spoiled. I now make my own dog food.
I was already making dog treats and bones for family and friends, so I decided to expand it into a business.

My new company is called Tedibles. Tedibles are all-natural doggie treats packaged in Eco-friendly containers. Some, but not all, ingredients are even organic. We use no preservatives, or fillers of any kind. Every batch is Ted-Tested, and he is more than happy to have the official position of Head Taste-tester.

Tedibles is also involved in several charities but only one is up and running at the moment, Ted's MPs. Read about it here.
I hope you'll visit often; we will be adding new products soon, including herbal shampoos, conditioners, and flea and tick repellents. Please bookmark us and come again.

I would love to offer a free 10 oz. bag of Tedibles to the winner of my giveaway. Enter here:

Earth Day

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ~Native American Proverb

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.

Birders Giveaway - Number Three

Birders Giveaway Number Three is really fantastic. I'm so excited for you. Here's what Birdfeeders.com is offering this time!
If you enter and win, you will receive a Birdscapes Royal Blue Ceramic Hanging-Standing Birdbath. Included is a terra cotta bowl with a glazed center, a black enamel steel stand, and a rust-resistant hanging wire. This bird bath is so versatile; hang it from your deck or use the stand in your garden.

Tip: When looking for the proper placement for a bird bath, remember that birds need clean feathers to fly, but once they get wet they don't fly quite as easily. Position the bird bath near a tree or shrub so they can seek protected shelter as soon as their bath is over while waiting for their feathers to dry.

Now if you're anxious to enter, here's how:

1. Leave a comment after visiting the Birdfeeders.com web site. Tell me something you learned about protecting the birds in your yard. Click here.

2. For a second chance to win, sign up as an e-mail subscriber with Feedburner, Feed Blitz, or become a Google Follower (see sidebar.) Then leave a second comment telling me you have subscribed or that you are already a subscriber.
If you subscribe in more than one way, leave a separate comment for each.

3. For a third chance to win, blog or Tweet about this contest with a link here, then come back and leave another comment telling me about it.

4. For a fourth chance to win, subscribe to the Birdfeeders.com E-Newsletter, then come back and tell me that you have done that.

5. If you're not a blogger, be sure to leave your contact e-mail address like this to avoid spammers: pianananna(at)gmail(dot)com. If I don't have a way to reach you or you don't respond in three days, your name will be disqualified, and I will choose again, picking my favorite answer.

Birders Giveaway - Number Two

And here is Giveaway Number Two : A Birdscapes Garden Sip & Seed from Perky Pet!
This wonderful feeder has two tubes; one for water and one for seed. It works perfectly if you don't have an area for a birdbath but still want to offer your feathered friends something to drink. The tubes are interchangeable so when you remove them for filling and cleaning, there's no problem trying to decide which one goes where.
A tube can hold either 1.5 lb. of seed or 27 oz. of water.
So you decide -- a tube of seed and a tube of water, or two tubes of seed, or maybe two tubes of water. The double water feature is a good idea for those birds that are not seed eaters. Maybe you can draw them a little closer to the window for ease in your birdwatching.
Both of these tubes can be mounted on the single scrollwork copper hanger by simply running the hook on the curly scroll. Easy as pie.

Visit my favorite place at Birdfeeders.com, the Wild Bird Library. You might learn something new.

Check out this video for a look at the glass and copper version of the Sip & Seed.

Patterns

I love looking up at the patterns that trees make against the sky. This is a great time to do that, when the new leaves are beginning to form. This is a very old maple, and I can see that soon there will be many, many, whirly-bird seeds dropping.
Someday I'd like to make a quilt with a pattern just like this of tree branches and a sky blue background.

A New Look at Spring.

Today, as I walked around the garden, I took a new look at Spring. April showers and the gentle sun have encouraged the plants to start producing flowers. The many beautiful flowering trees are in bud and the birds are singing their noisy songs in the morning calling out to each other in hopes of finding a mate. Or maybe they are just as thrilled with spring as I am. How I love this time of year.

Here are a few different looks at my garden. It's a bittersweet tour for me. We have finally received and accepted an offer on our house. I'm not sure how much longer I will be here, and I am trying to soak up and enjoy every day of the garden that took me 15 years to sculpt and create. We are house shopping at this moment but still don't know where we'll live. Wherever it is, I will build a new garden area, and I plan to take my blogging friends on the journey with me.
Until then, here are a few shots of this year's fantastic flowers.
