My Daylilies Get a New Home

I haven't been blogging much lately. Why? Because I'm giving my daylilies a new home. Well, most of them.

I have started to divide each and every plant in my garden so that when I put the house up for sale in the spring, I will have a piece of each of my favorite plants. And the new home owner won't even know they are gone.
I dig each one up and put it into a bag with a tag or marker. Then off it goes to it's new home.

My son-in-law has made a new garden at his and my daughter's home. They brought in 16 yards of black dirt and spread it along their driveway. Their house is only a few years old and they have been working very hard on the yard. They decided they wanted to house my daylilies for me until I am ready to move into a new place, wherever that might be. Then if the daylilies have multiplied enough, we will divide them again. I will take my half and leave them a fan or two and they will have a daylily garden, too.

So far, we have planted over 70 daylilies plus several peonies, hibiscus, lilies, and Siberian irises. We have 60 more daylilies to go. My back has been bothering me,(any wonder?)so I only do 5 or 6 at a time. One day my son-in-law dug 17 and I had done 16 earlier so he took home 33 plants. I wish someone like me was around when I was building my garden!

I am so glad you have a place to put your plants for now so that you are able to keep them, Jane Marie! You're right the next homeowner will never miss them:) You have such a beautiful home, but leaving your lovely garden behind must be the most difficult part of all. I'm happy you've found a way to take part of it with you.

Wow Jane Marie, those numbers are astounding! I thought 75 was a lot. Think how pretty that area by their driveway will be with all those daylilies next year and for years to come. The soil looks good too. I would love to start over with my daylilies, I have added so many other plants in that bed to extend the interest beyond the two months of dayliliy bloom here that it is a jumble. Many need dividing too but it is such a big job as you say. This solution is a great boon to both you and your kids, all good! Even the new owners of your house will benefit from nicely spaced plants. Hooray for all!

Wow, no wonder your back has been hurting Jane Marie ~ that's a LOT of work! It will be so worth it when you move into your new home tho. Good luck finishing up this task.

Jane Marie, how organized you are! I'm so glad you are getting to take some of your garden with you. It would be hard to leave all your dear friends. But it sounds like you have a perfect arrangement set up. Lucky daughter and son in law!

Sharing is a blessing, dear Jane Marie. Think of how thankful you will be seeing your gift blooming in your new garden, those you have shared, and those left behind in your memory. I delight viewing my children's gardens, seeing the many gifts shared throughout my many years of gardening (and delight in the thoughtful gifts others have shared with me).

What a wonderful way to preserve your own daylily garden and share with others, too! I wish I was that organized. I love daylilies and need to think about digging a new area and planting some more. I always hate leaving behind favorite plants when I move anywhere. I have some here that I moved from my last house and if I move again, I imagine I will take a few things from here to wherever.

I hope they all survive for you - I tried to bring a bunch of plants with me when we moved. Sadly, they all died.

No wonder your back is sore, Jane Marie! I'm sorry you'll be leaving your beloved Victorian home, but you'll have a great adventure creating a new garden. What a blessing to have such a great spot to store your many daylilies. Their beauty will bring joy to your daughter and SIL, as well as the new owners of your house. What a thoughtful gesture. I hope your back feels better soon.
