I love lavender; I love the color, I love the smell, and I love the way it makes me feel. Famous for its relaxing properties, it makes me feel calm, relaxed, and feminine. I know some say it's for grandmas, but guess what, I'm a grandma. Anyway I think lavender is timeless and for all ages.

If you've read Happenstance House you've seen one of my bedrooms decorated in shades of lavender.
In the summer I get very wrapped up in my daylilies and sometimes take my poor herbs for granted. But I've had a very productive herb harvest. My jars are full of dried herbs waiting for to be used in soups, stews, sauces, and even cookies and cakes. I'll use lavender in several desserts, even muffins!
In Michigan, as in all states that experience cold harsh winds, we have to take care of our lips. Moisturizing is important for comfort and for a luscious-looking mouth.
I just came across this wonderful recipe to make my own lip balm using lavender essential oil, and I'm so excited.
I can't make this with anything I've grown in my garden. It will take a trip to a health food store. Luckily for me, there's one very near by. The recipe seems simple enough so I'm going to give a try, and I thought you would like to try it, too.
What you'll need:
2 tablespoons almond oil
2 tablespoons jojoba oil
1 tablespoon grated beeswax
10 drops lavender essential oil
Combine almond oil, jojoba oil, and beeswax. Warm gently over very low heat until beeswax melts. Remove from heat. Add essential oil and stir thoroughly. Pour into small wide-mouth lip balm containers (those little metal pill containers work well) and cool, stirring occasionally if necessary to keep the mixture from separating.
That's it!! Easy? Let me know how it works for you, then let the lavender soften your lips and take you away to a dreamy place of warm gentle breezes.

Sounds wonderful. I'd like to give it a try!
its good to know about it? where did you get that information?
wow, very special, i like it.
Hey thanks for the recipe. I think I might like to make me some of that.
Debbi.
I didn't realize you could use lavender in baking! This lip balm sounds very soothing; I might try making some myself. I love to spray a little lavendar on my pillowcases--it helps for those nights when I have trouble sleeping.
How wonderful to have all those herbs to use this winter. I also love lavender-the color and the smell. Your lip balm sounds like it would be easy to make and so much less expensive than buying those designer ones.
Good morning Jane Marie, that sounds wonderful! There's so much news out there about the dangers of synthethic cosmetics including lip balms. By making our own we can be sure of what's in it and pinch some pennies in the process.
I'm not a grandma, or even a mama, but I adore lavender, too! I think that it's the fake lavender smell that kind of reminds one of grandma's house... the real thing is much more lovely. :)
Can you let us know if you do try to make that lip balm? If it's any good, I would love to give it a try once I go through the couple of Burt's Bees sticks I still have.
Hi Jane Marie, I'm so glad you stopped by my site and left a comment. I'm always happy to find another garden blogger. The lavender is so beautiful. I planted some this summer. I've tried it several times and never gotten it to winter over. I am determined;) Maybe this time I've got a sheltered spot it will do well in.

Those lavender flowers are wondeful! Such a beautiful color. I'm always drawn to purple flowers of any sort....violets, lilacs, iris.
Your lavender looks so wonderful!! I can almost smell them. Now, I dearly love that quilt!!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Do I need this? Indeed I do! Thanks, Jane Marie. I adore lavender ... licking my lips on windy chilling days putting my garden to bed and with winter knocking on the door, this is indeed a timely post.
The pictures of the lavenders are so nice. But recipe I don’t like.
Hi Jane Marie, that is a wonderful recipe. Back in the Faire Garden, the business, days I made this as a product. Not one bit cost effective, but a wonderful balm for your lips. If it was kept in a cold room, it would be a little hard, you could warm the jar in your hands to soften it up. The smell was delightful while making up the batches, the whole house was permeated with the lavender and beeswax perfume. It could be a scent for the house too!

I love Lavender, I have just recently began to add herbs to my garden. I enjoy brushing us against them and taking in the wonderful fragrances.
