Like the song, do you say tuh-may-toe or toe-mah-toe?
Then, do you say Autumn or Fall for the third season of the year?
In my neck of the woods, we say Fall. And it's suddenly very obvious why. Yesterday, we still had high 70 temps, a beautiful day, today it's overcast and cool. The house has a chill, and I think it's almost time to kick on that furnace.
I stuck my head out the door this morning and saw leaves on the ground --

-- and leaves beginning to turn color on the trees --

-- and the Virginia creeper showing a bright shade of red.

There's no turning back the clock, Mother Nature takes over from here whether I cal it Autumn or Fall.

I say Autumn and toemahtoe - and that's because I spent two years in England when I was young(ger). And I've only been to the States once...for a week. You do say Fall in the US, dont' you?
Leaves are falling here, too and Autumn is here!

Autumn or fall, either/or, but it's usually toe-may-toe for me. :) I'm afraid Kyle is stealing a lot of our early color as I write this...it's a wild night out there! You're right, fall is here, no turning back now. :)
I say fall, too, and to-may-toe. Fall is slowly creeping in here--it's been very warm, but I think we'll see a change this week. The trees are still green, but I just spotted a few turning on the maple tree. I can't wait to see its gorgeous orange colors in a few weeks.
That's still a cute song, Jane Marie - and I say tah-may-toe. Must be leftover from growing up in Chicago!
What about the Ee-ther/Eye-ther thing? I say Ee-ther but there's a generation shift happening because my daughter says Eye-ther.
As to fall or Autumn, your pictures may make us hum "The Autumn Leaves", but it doesn't feel like Ee-ther one in Austin, where we still have dry days in the nineties.

I say tuh-may-toe and Fall. I love Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies, by the way :-) My leaves are falling and my yard looks like these photos, but we have very little color so far. It is the drought making them fall right now, and the color will come later.
I say tuh-may-toe and say Fall, but usually write Autumn, mostly because the word Fall has more than one meaning. My dad doesn't pronounce the "L" in almond. He says "ah-mund."
Hi Jane!
Been loving your autumnal posts! Yep, it's definitely getting to be that time of year. But I love it though! The days are cooler and the light has a more orangey quality in the afternoon. Down here in Georgia we say "fawl" and "maters"! I'm getting my "laytusses" (lettuces) ready to plant ~ I can't wait for a home- grown green salad now that they won't bolt from the heat the second the seeds pop up. :)
Thanks for your comment about Paul Newman. It's been so sad these last few days without him. All the good ones have left us, and we are left with a bunch of scruffy stars. No one has his charm and style.
Lots of hugs, Bebe :)
Hi Jane Marie ... have been traveling the past 10 days following Michigan sun, shocked how the leaves changed UP NORTH in those few days ~ very 'autumn-like' though 'fall' had arrived here at home also. (Ate tons of fresh 'tuh-may-toes' along the way;)
I say both but love the sounds of the word autumn. And I adore Fred and Ginger. Thanks for showing the clip! Aren't they just amazing and is this perhaps where the idea of ice dancing came from? It is autumn in full here in Holland. Our colors are coming along so nicely and my Virginia Creeper is bright crimson with berries.
Hugs ~
Heidi
