And what will happen if Hillary wins the election? Will we have a First Man or a First Gentleman? Since Bill Clinton has already been President, he should be addressed as Mr. President for the rest of his life; therefore, if he ends up being First Husband, will they, as a couple, be introduced as Mr. and Mrs. President? Or should it be reversed to give her the status the office deserves -- Mrs. and Mr. President? Hmmmm, food for thought!

I did some research and discovered that there are many wonderful plants named after First Ladies starting with a cherry tree called "First Lady" Prunus.

This is the Mary Todd Daylily which I own and recently featured from my own garden.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Iris is a wonderful shade of deep purple.

And here's Mamie Eisenhower -- another yellow daylily.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Daylily -- just as stylish as it's namesake. I think I need to own this one.

The Barbara Bush Hybrid Tea Rose-- isn't it delicate? Maybe too delicate for the Texan mother of five.

And the Laura Bush Floribunda Rose -- a strong color, like the lady herself.
And who can forget about Lady Bird Johnson and all that she did regarding wildflowers? Take a virtual visit to her Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.
I looked for a Bill Clinton rose or daylily just in case he's all set. But nothing came up on the computer. Could that be a sign of what's to come?
Please don't take any part of this as a political endorsement; I'm unhappy with all choices. I might sit this election out!
No matter what happens, I still have great respect for the position of the First Lady. In my opinion she will always be held in high regard. Do you know of any other First Lady flowers?

Absolutely gorgeous photos! I love the purples! What a lovely yard you must have!
Thank you, Michelle. The only plant I have of this group is Mary Todd and Barbara Bush. The others are one my dream list :)
Beautiful Photos and some good food for thought!! I am too undecided/unhappy with our candidates :(
I agree with all you have said. And I also agree about the Barbara Bush statement! I'm growing less enamored of all candidates by the day. But I wish we would all feel comfortable enough, me included, to let others (blogger friends) know our true thoughts about all this. ME included!

it always amazes me how long the presidential contest goes on in the US and how the same families keep reappearing.
A most thought provoking post, Jane Marie. I am with you regarding great respect for the position of the First Lady. You are a dear to remind all of the many GREAT women who stand behind 'their man'.
Very interesting post! I like the purple Eleanor Roosevelt iris, but the Jackie Onassis daylily wins my vote, too.
I do have the Barbara Bush Rose and the Laura Bush Rose I just got yesterday! They are very pretty.
